Some national figures, including FSA executives, fervently claim that Parliament needs to create new laws to bring charges in the banking and City scandal (Polly Toynbee’s & Simon Jenkin’s articles, Guardian 6 July 2012). Lawyers tell me this is gibberish and that old laws such as the Theft Act and Fraudulent Conspiracy will punish the guilty companies and individuals and recover the criminal proceeds. These are not the first rogue City traders in legal history. Do the bankers’ apologists have large overdrafts or secret off-shore funds at Barclays?
