Update 3 Sept 2014 - Laugh! - I nearly bought me own beer! US Human Rights - "Let lunatics have guns."

...When Lewis was president of the Maryland Sheriffs’ Association, he testified with other sheriffs against the state’s Firearms Safety Act (FSA) before it was enacted in 2013. One of the strictest gun laws in the nation, the act requires gun applicants to supply fingerprints and complete training to obtain a handgun license online. It bans 45 types of firearms, limits magazines to 10 rounds and outlaws gun ownership for people who have been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.  READ THE ARTICLE

Newtown Connecticut; Dunblane Scotland; Belsan Russia; Utoyea Island Norway; Jokela Finland; Columbine Colorado; Virginia Polytechnic; …and this website lists another fifty similar, crazed, gun attacks on youngsters.

The world is never short of psychopaths who kill children. Two thousand years ago, at the first Christmas, King Herod slaughtered all the Bethlehem infants up to two years old; just in case one of them might grow to challenge him. Since then, wars have slaughtered millions of blameless young people and recently have forced Congo children to pick up guns and join murderous bands. Will we change our primitive ways, and ‘Put Away Childish Things’ to mark and learn from these latest, terrible, sad, tragic, shocking, deranged murders?

The world is full of lunatics – as the American National Rifle Association (NRA) tells the global media.  (Beretta firing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELol1dHjHEE )

Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York, speaking of the 27 people killed this week by automatic gun fire at the Sandy Hook junior school in Newtown, stressed that the US is the only developed country that allows citizens to carry arms. He wants President Obama and US Senators to ban rapid-fire automatic weapons.

The NRA mistakenly believes that being armed protects ordinary people; the reverse is true. University of Philadelphia statistics show that armed citizens are 4.5 times (450%) more likely to be shot than unarmed folk. Instead of banning guns, the NRA wants government to identify mentally unstable people (how?) – before they get a gun and kill others – and …what? Incarcerate them “just in case”? Eliminate them from the gene pool? Perhaps shoot them? The NRA’s second argument to allow all red-bloodied real Americans to continue to tote guns capable of firing 19 rounds in 3 seconds …is to “arm the schoolteachers and children so they can protect themselves”.  Spot the Looney indeed.

Needless to say – though of little use to the bereaved families – I offer them my sympathy and empathy and prayers, as a parent and a human being.

Facts - New Scientist - Branas's study found that people who carried guns were 4.5 times as likely to be shot and 4.2 times as likely to get killed compared with unarmed citizens. When the team looked at shootings in which victims had a chance to defend themselves, their odds of getting shot were even higher. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17922-carrying-a-gun-increases-risk-of-getting-shot-and-killed.html
Facts - Wikipedia - In 2009, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 66.9% of all homicides in the United States were perpetrated using a firearm.[4] There were 52,447 deliberate and 23,237 accidental non-fatal gunshot injuries in the United States during 2000.[5] The majority of gun-related deaths in the United States are suicides,[6] with 17,352 (55.6%) of the total 31,224 firearm-related deaths in 2007 due to suicide, while 12,632 (40.5%) were homicide deaths.[7]
